العلم خير ما صرفت فيه الأوقات، وأفضل ما اشتغل به مشتغل قبل الممات، وأحسن ما توجهت إليه الرغبات، وعلم التاريخ من خير ما صرفت إليه الهمم، وجرى به القلم؛ إذ به تعرف أحوال السابقين، وتلمح أفكار النابغين، وتميز بين الغث والسمين، وتطلع على أخبار الأمم السابقين. إذا عرف الإنسان أخبار من مضى تخيلته قد عاش حيناً من الدهر فقد عاش كل الدهر من كان عالماً كريماً حليماً فاغتنم أطول العمر تنتقل من موعظة إلى عبرة ومنها إلى فكاهة، ومن مشهد قوة إلى مشهد ضعف، ومن مشهد أمانة إلى مشهد خيانة وضعف ديانة، إلى حياة عالم بأمة، إلى سلطان قوي بنى مجداً، أو ضعيف ضيع أمة، والعلماء هم سادة الناس والملوك قادتهم. وهذا كتاب يجمع بين طياته سير العلماء وتراجمهم مولداً ونعتاً ووفاة، وذكر طرف من أخبار الملوك الأعيان فجمع بين الحسنيين. وقد جعله المؤلف مختصراً جامعاً لذكر الفريقين ورؤساء الدارين، وقدم العلماء لفضلهم، وثنى بالملوك الذين هم ظل الله في أرضه، يأوي إليهم كل ملهوف، وإن الله ليزع بالسلطان ما لا يزع بالقرآن. ومؤلفنا الجَنَدي رحمه الله تعالى أتحفنا بهذا المؤلَّف، وبيَّن مصادره التي أخذ منها، ونقل عنها، وبركة العلم عزوه لقائله، وامتاز تأليف الجندي عن غيره بأمور: منها: أنه جمع بين الأحداث التاريخية السياسية، وبين تراجم أهل الفضل والعلم ومزج بينهما، وهذا الذي ينبيك به عنوان الكتاب. ومنها: أنه امتاز بضبطه للأماكن الجغرافية في اليمن، وقد تأسَّى في ذلك بالعلامة ابن خلكان كما أشار لذلك رحمهما الله تعالى. ومنها: أنه أخذ ممن سبقه، وتأثر كثيراً بشيخه ابن سَمُرة، ولما وصل إلى القرن السابع ونضب معين مراجعه.. شمر عن ساعده، وارتحل وتحمل المشاق والصعاب؛ ليكتب بنفسه عن تلك الحقبة، مما جعله مورداً لمن بعده. هذا نزر يسير من بعض فضائل هذا السِّفر النافع المبارك، تقدمه دار المنهاج كما عودت قراءها بحلة قشيبة، وتحقيق على ثلاثة أصول خطية، هي من أقدم ما وجد من نسخ، نسأل الله أن يجعله مقبولاً، وبالعناية مشمولاً.
