هذا الكتاب محاولة شامله وجرئية لفهم ميشيل فوكو بشكل غير متجزئ، وهو مالم تتسم به الدراسات السابقة، على قلتها، حيث حاولت أن تفهم فوكو من خلال كتاب واحد له، فتركز على أحد الجوانب على حساب الآخر، أو تجمد فوكو فى مرحلة زمنية محددة، فتفقد أعماله الحيوية والتطور اللذين ميزاها، خاصة عندما ننظر إليها بشكل متكامل، وهو ما شوه عمله الأصلى. ولعل هذا هو السبب عينه الذى جعلنا نرى تطبيقات عديدة ومتناقضة فى واقعنا العربي الثقافى من محيطه غلى خليجه، تدعى كل منها الإحالة على فوكو، ولا يظهر فيها وقد تم تعريبه وتأميمه، بل وإقصاء حيوية وجدية أطروحاته فيصبح جامداً، بارداً. بل وتستخدم مقولاته فى تبريروا إثبات ما كن يعن للمفكر ذاته - قبل البحث - تمشاشياً مع أيديولوجيته السياسية أو الدينية.
