لم أكتب ما سيلى لما سبق.. أى للماضى. كتبته طعنا فى الحاضر، وشقا للمستقبل. اكتشفت مع هذا الكتاب أن مصر فى الثلاثينيات والأربعينيات كانت أكثر تحررا فكريا ونشاطا ثقافيا مما هى عليه الآن فى الثمانينات. وقتها لم تكن بها هيئة للطاقة الذرية. ولم تكن تصنع الصاروخ، بل كانت مستعمرة يحكمها التاج البريطانى والمندوب السامى لجلالة الملكة. مع ذلك كانت مصر جزءا من الحيوية الثقافية العالمية. كان كبار كتاب وفنانى العالم يحرصون على زيارتها، وكانت تربط بعضهم علاقات مع كبار كتابنا وفنانينا. كانت مصر تموج بحركات ثقافية حية من اتجاهات مختلفة. كانت تلك الحركات جزءا من الحيوية الثقافية العالمية، مثلما كانت حركة الفن والحرية فى مصر جزءا من الحركة السريالية العالمية فى نهاية عصرها الذهبى.
كان بين هذه الجماعات تنافس بناء، فبينما كان المتمردون والمجددون يتجمعون فى جماعات تقدمية مثل "الفن والحرية" كان المحافظون والكلاسيكيون من الفنانين التشكيليين يتجمعون فى "صالون القاهرة". وبينما كانت مجلة "انيفور" تنشر رسائل من بول فاليرى إلى جماعة "المحاولين"، كان طه حسين ينشر فى مجلة "الكاتب المصرى" رسائل من أندريه جيد، مثلما كان جورج حنين ينشر رسائل من اندريه بريتون إلى السرياليين المصريين. إن الدرس الذى نستخلصه من هذا الكتاب هو نفس الدرس الذى أضاءته السريالية: التحطيم عمل فنى، مثلما هو بناء.. الخيال هو المقدس الوحيد فى الواقع.. لا ثقافة بلا حرية. وبدلا من تخصيص صفحات لشرح معنى السريالية وجوهرها بشكل مباشر، تركت فصول الكتاب لتقوم بهذه المهمة.
