إن العرب منذ أشرقت شمس هذا الكون وهم تحت سمائها يفخرون بأحسابهم وأنسابهم، يحفظنها عن ظهر قلب، ويعتبرونها أساس وجودهم ومدعاة شرفهم، يتفاخرون بها في مجالسهم ورحلاتهم، فتصدع صدى أصواتهم في الملأ وهم ينطقون بنسبهم ويحاولون التشديد على عرقهم لإظهار مكانتهم، وقبيلتهم.
ومن هنا استقى عبد الكريم بن منصور السمعاني إشكالية بحثه: فأصدر كتاب الأنساب بأجزائه الست. ويعدّ هذا المصنف، من أهم المراجع في تاريخ الأنساب وهو أشبه بمعجم يسرد التسلسل التاريخي لأنساب العديد من الاعلام في الحقبة التاريخية الغابرة.
ويعدّ علم المعارف والأنساب من أهم العلوم التي وضعها الله سبحانه وتعالى. ومعرفة الأنساب من أعظم النعم التي أغدقت على البشرية لن تشعب الأنساب على افتراق القبائل والطوائف أحد الأسباب لحصول الائتلاف، كذلك اختلاف الألسنة والصور وتباين الألوان والفِطر.
يدعو المؤلف في هذا المصنف إلى حثّ قارئه على تعلم الأنساب والتعمق بدراستها حيث جمع في طيات صفحاته عدد هائل من أنساب العديد من الاعلام التاريخية. وقد قسم مصنفه هذا إلى ستة أجزاء، تضمنت الخمس الأوائل منها التسلسل النسبي لمختلف رجالات التاريخ وقد جاءت وفقاً للتسلسل الهجائي للحروف في لغة الضاض. أما الجزء السادس والأخير فيشكل فهرساً هجائياً يوضح للقارئ كيفية تصنيف مضامين مختلف الأجزاء الأخرى.
