كان أبي وأمي ينظران إلى وجه نامابيا الضاحك بقلق صامت، وكنت أعلم علم اليقين أنّهما كانا يتساءلان في سرهما ما إذا كان ابنهما عضواً في عصابة أم لا.
في بعض الأحيان كنت أجزمُ أنه ينتمي إلى إحداها. فأفراد العصابات يتمتعون بسمعة ذائعة الصيت، وسمعةُ نامابيا واسعةُ الانتشار.
الصبيان الآخرون كانوا ينادونه بلقب - «الجبان»- ثم يصافحونه يداً بيد، كلّما مرّ بهم، أما الفتيات، وبخاصة شلّة «الجميلات الكبيرات» المعروفة، فكنّ يعانقنه لأطول مدّة ممكنة، في كلّ مرّة يقلْن له مرحباً.
كان يرتادُ جميع الحفلات، تلك الهادئة، في السكن الجامعي، وتلك الأكثر صخباً، في المدينة، وكان، بحقّ، الذكر المحبّب بين الفتيات، والذكّر المحبب بين الذكور، والشابّ الذي يستطيعُ أن يدخّن علبة روثمان كاملة في اليوم، بل واشتُهر بأنه يستطيع أن يحتسي صندوقاً كاملاً من البيرة، في جلسةٍ واحدة.
وفي أحيان أخرى، كنتُ أظنّ أنه لا ينتمي إلى أي جماعة بعينها، لأنّ سمعته اخترقت الآفاق، وكان أسلوبه يتطلّب أن يصادق الصبيان من مختلف الانتماءات، وأن لا يكون عدواً لأحدٍ منهم.
كما أنني لم أكنْ متأكّدةً أنّ شقيقي يمتلك حقاً المؤهّلات المطلوبة- الشجاعة وفقدان الأمان- للانضمام إلى عصابة ما.
المرة الوحيدة التي سألته فيها ما إذا كان فرداً في عصابة، نظر إليّ بدهشةٍ، عبر رموشه الطويلة، الكثيفة، كأنما ليقول لي، ينبغي أن تعرفي أكثر من أن توجّهي سؤالاً كهذا، فقط ليجيب جازماً، «بالطبع، لا».
عندئذٍ صدّقته. وأبي صدّقه أيضاً. لكن حقيقة أننا صدّقناه لم تغير في الأمر شيئاً، فقد أُلقي القبض عليه، ووجّهت له تهمة الانتماء إلى عصابة.
وقد قال لي هذا- «بالطبع، لا »- أثناء أوّل زيارة لنا إلى قسم الشرطة، حيث زُجّ به في السجن. وإليكم ما حدث. في أحد أيام الاثنين الرّطبة، انتظر أربعةٌ من أفرادالعصابة، أمام بوابة الجامعة، وكمنوا لأستاذة جامعية، تركب سيارة مرسيدس، حمراء اللون. وضعوا مسدّساً في رأسها، وجرّوها خارج السيارة، ثم ركبوا متوجّهين إلى كلّية الهندسة، وهناك قاموا بإطلاق النّار على ثلاثة صبية كانوا يخرجون من قاعات المحاضرة. كان الوقتُ ظهراً. كنت، أنا، داخل الصفّ المجاور.
