يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى اكتشاف وتحليل المسارات المتناقضة التي سلكتها الدولة الإفريقية عبر مراحلها التاريخية المختلفة، والحجّة المركزية التي يقوم عليها فهم الباحث لطبيعة الدولة ودورها في إفريقيا مفادها أنّ المصالح الغربية في إفريقيا كانت ثابتة تاريخياً، وتتمثل في الوصول إلى العمالة الرخيصة، والسيطرة على الاقتصاد والأسواق والمواد الخام، وعليه، فقد تم تشكيل دولة الاستعمار في إفريقيا لتحقيق هذه الأهداف الغربية.
ويكشف الكتاب تطور الدولة في إفريقيا الذي اتّسم بالتناقض والارتباك، إذ أسِّست الدولة الاستعمارية للسيطرة على القارة طبقاً لمبدأ التطور اللامتكافئ في النظام الرأسمالي العالمي. بيد أن مسيرة دولة ما بعد الاستعمار عكست تناقضاً واضحاً في تطورها، فقد عبرت من جهة أولى عن وضع الهشاشة السياسية الشديدة، ومن جهة ثانية عن الاتساق الشديد في خدمة مصالح رأس المال الأجنبي، سواء كان ذلك في سياق الاستعمار الجديد، أو العولمة الليبرالية الجديدة.
