يواكب هذا الكتاب التطورات الجديدة في مجال (علم الجغرافيا) وطرقه ووسائله وتقنياته وأدواته، من خلال دراسة (جغرافية – كارتوجرافية) تتناول سكان محافظة دهوك الفترة 1947-2006 وفقاً للمناهج البحثية المعاصرة ونظم المعلومات الجغرافية (GIS) وهي دراسة يعمل من خلالها المؤلف على المزاوجة بين وسائل التحليل الإحصائي والمكاني في بيئة نظم المعلومات الجغرافية وتحليل الظاهرات الجغرافية ...
تعمد الدراسة إلى توضيح البنية الأساسية لبعض وسائل التحليل المكاني للبيانات الجغرافية في بيئة نظم المعلومات الجغرافية يمكن الإستفادة منها – كما يشير مؤلف الكتاب – في تحليل البيانات السكانية على المستوى الإقليمي، وفي دراسة وتحليل العديد من عناصر الظواهر الجغرافية ضمن مستويات مكانية متباينة، في وقت تفتقر المكتبة الجغرافية باللغة العربية إلى مصادر توضح وتشرح مثل هذه الوسائل، مثل "طرق التصنيف ضمن بيئة برنامج (ArcGIS9.3)، ووسائل بناء نماذج السطح المستمرة وتوقع البيانات بطريقة وزن المسافة المعكوسة (Distance Weighting Inverts) وطريقة الـ (Kringing)، ثم محاولة تطبيق بعض هذه التقنيات بمنهجية واضحة خطوة بخطوة".
يقع الكتاب في أربعة فصول ولكل فصل مباحثه الثانوية. عالج الفصل الأول الوسائل والتقنيات المستخدمة في الدراسة بما فيها التقنيات الإحصائية والكارتوكرافية ضمن ثلاثة نقاط رئيسية هي بالإضافة إلى التقنيات الإحصائية، الخرائط الموضوعية وطرق الإستكمال والتصنيف. أما الفصل الثاني فتضمن دراسة حجم السكان ونموهم في محافظة دهوك خلال فترة الدراسة وفق مؤشرات معتمدة. وتطرق الفصلين الثالث والرابع إلى التوزيعين العددي والنسبي للسكان في المحافظة، والعمل على تحليل أنماط الكثافة السكانية، وإيضاح نمط تركز السكان وفقاً للمؤشرات المعتمدة في الدراسة.
