أستاذ ومؤرخ مسرحي اسكتلندى، من اعظم الذين كتبوا في تاريخ المسرح والدراما، عمل أستاذاً للغة الإنجليزية وآدابها في جامعات لندن وبرمنجهام، كما عمل لفترة رئيساً لقسم الدراما بجامعة ييل الأمريكية، حيث أنشأ أرشيفا ضخماً للدراسات المسرحية يضم مواد بالغة القيمة الأهمية في هذا المجال، ألف عدداً كبيراً من الكتب الهامة عن الجوانب المختلفة للفنون المسرحية منها الأقنعة، والتمثيل الصامت، مسرحية المعجزة، ومن أهم كتبه الدراما الإنجليزية، المسرح الإنجليزي وقراءات في الدراما الإنجليزية، وضع مؤلفاً ضخماً من جزأين عن الدراما في القرن التاسع عشر 1850-1900 _1946) وهو جزء من سلسلة من 19 مجلداً بدأ كتابتها 1923 وتغطى في مجموعها تاريخ المسرح الإنجليزي منذ عصر عودة الملكية.
كان أيضاً من كبار الدارسين لمسرح شكسبير وكان يرأس سنوياً مؤتمراً لدراسى شكسبير في ستراتفورد آبون أفوت أثناء المهرجان السنوي الذي يعقد في مسقط رأس الشاعر.
رأس تحرير حوليات شكسبير التي تصدر عن جامعة برمنجهام، وقد أسس في تلك الجامعة مركزاً هاماً لدراسات شكسبير، ظل يؤلف عن المسرح حتى وفاته وكان يرأس جمعية البحوث المسرحية منذ 1958، زار جامعة القاهرة في أوائل الخمسينات.
