اعتمد مصنف هذا الكتاب في تأليفه على كتاب السُهيلي، وهو في علم جليل اشتغل السلف الصالح به، لكنهم لم يعنوا بالتأليف فيه إلا بعد القرن السادس الهجري، وقد وردت فيه أقوال متناثرة في بطون كتب التفسير والحديث والتأريخ.

والسهيلي الذي أخذ عنه المؤلف هو أول من ألف فيه وله الكتاب المعروف بـ "التعريف والإعلام فيما أبهم في القرآن من الأسماء والأعلام، وقد أشار ابن عسكر إلى أنه قد فهم مقاصد هذا الكتاب. ومنحاه، واقتطف من أزاهر رياضه، حتى صنف كتابه هذا "التكميل والإتمام" ليكون تكملة لكتاب شيخه. وقد سلك منهجاً علمياً في كتابه اقتفى به أثر أستاذه في منهجه وطريقة عرضه، فهو يبدأ باسم السورة ذاكراً عدد مواضع الإبهام فيها ثم يسردها مفصلة أولاً بأول. إلى أن يأتي على ما في السورة، ثم يعود لينبه على المواطن التي ذكرها الشيخ وما قاله فيها، ويبسط من ثم القول فيما استدركه عليه من أقوال العلماء. وقد عمد المحقق إلى تحقيق مخطوط هذا الكتاب، فقابل نسخة الكتاب عن الأصل، مع نسخة أخرى، مثبتاً الفروق بينهما وقسم النص وفصّله، وضبط ما وجده بحاجة للضبط ولا سيما الآيات الكريمات والأحاديث الشريفة والأبيات الشعرية وبعض أسماء الأعلام والمواضع ورقم السور وفق ترتيبها في المصحف لتسهيل الرجوع إليها ورقم الآيات، كما خرج الأحاديث، والآثار والنصوص الشعرية، ووضع فهارس فنية منوعة تتماشى مع النهج الحديث في التحقيق.
