تعد مدرسة النجف الأشرف من أبرز المدارس التي ازدهرت فيها الحركة العلمية منذ مطلع القرن الحادي عشر الميلادي بعد هجرة الشيخ الطوسي إليها عام 448هـ الموافق 1056م، والذي بدأ بتشكيل الحلقات الدراسية وتوفير إمكاناتها، وكان لوجود المرقد العلوي المقدس الدور الرئيس في نقل إمكاناته في النجف الأشرف، علاوة على وجود ثلة من الأفاضل في المدينة، وقد مرّت الحوزة العلمية ومنذ تأسيسها بعدة أدوار في تطورها المعرفي، وقدم عدد من المحققين للحوزة العلمية من نهوض فكري وملامح للتطور من خلال نتاجاتهم العلمية والمعرفية، ولا سيما في الفقه وأصوله، وقد تكاملت في الوسط العلمي النجفي أدوات البحث الفنية ورسائله العلمية في التحليل والإستقراء والإستنتاج والمقارنة والنقد والمناقشة.
لم تقتصر المدرسة النجفية على الكتب والأبحاث العلمية في الفقه وأصوله فقط بل تعدت إلى التأليف في العلوم الأخرى، التي تعتمد على استنباط الأحكام الشرعية كالحديث والتاريخ والتراجم والسير والفلسفة والحكمة والفلك والرياضيات، وتخرج منها آلاف العلماء الأفذاذ وزعماء الفقه الإسلامي وأئمة الأصول والحديث والتفسير، وفي مقدمتهم المرجع الديني الأعلى للعالم الإسلامي وزعيم الطائفة السيد الأستاذ أبو القاسم الموسوي الخوئي، الذي كان يمتلك موهبة رائعة ومقدرة علمية عالية، وقد أبدع في أبحاثه الفقهية والأصولية.
