هذا الكتاب يتكون من مقدمة وسبعة فصول. وقد تعرض الباحث في المقدمة للمرحلة الزمنية التي ظهر فيها جمال الدين الأفغاني، وانتقل منها إلى سيرة حياته.
كذلك تناول موقف الأفغاني من الرأسمالية والاشتراكية والثورة الفرنسية، وموقفه الرافض من نظرية التطور لداروين في رسالته "الرد على الدهريين". كما تعرض الباحث لمرحلة "العروة الوثقى" في باريس في حياة الأفغاني، وتناول أيضاً نشاط الأفغاني في الأستانة، ودعوته إلى الجامعة الإسلامية، وتحدث أيضاً عن موقف الأفغاني من الحرب والسلام، واعتباره الحرب أقبح ما عمله ويعمله الإنسان على ظهر الأرض.
واختتم الباحث صفحات هذا الكتاب الحديث عن حياة الأفغاني التقشفية.
