دراسة الطلب وذلك بالتطرق على مقدرته العلمية ( ذكائه – قدراته ) وقابليته واستعداده وحاجاته ومشاكله وشخصيته لمساعدته على فهم نفسه ومعاونته على التخلص من مشاكله .
أما التوجيه المهني فيُقصد به مساعدة الفرد على تفهم حقيقة نفسه بالطريقة التي تمكنه من بذل قدراته واستغلال مواهبه في الناحية التي تعود عليه وعلى الجميع بالفائدة والمنفعة الكاملة .
على حين يُعرف الإرشاد النفسي بأنه العملية التي تتم بين شخصين أحدهما قلق نضطرب بسبب بعض المشكلات التي لا يستطيع وبحكم إعداده المهني وخبرته العلمية أن يقدم المساعدة الفنية التي تمكّن الفرد من الوصول إلى حل لمشكلاته .
وعلى وفق هذه التعاريف لكل من التوجيه ( التربوي والمهني ) والإرشاد النفسي يمكننا أن نتبين فرقاً آخر بين المصطلحين فالأول لا يتطلب بالضرورة وجود علاقة مباشرة ( وجهاً لوجه ) بين الموجه والمراجع على حين أن الإرشاد النفسي لا يتطلب وجود علاقة مباشرة بين المرشد والمراجع .
