اختلف الدارسون في نشأة الشعر الإخواني كما اختلفوا في تعريفه، فمنهم من يرده إلى العصر الجاهلي، ومنهم من يرجعه إلى العصر العباسي عصر الحضارة العربية الزاهية، والحق أن بعضه ظهر في العصر الجاهلي كالعتاب والاعتذار والاستماحة والشكر، وفي عصر صدر الإسلام ظهرت التعزية والتهنئة والود بالإضافة إلى ما سبق، وفي العصر الأموي بدأت المطارحات في الظهور إلى جانب الأغراض الآنفة الذكر، فلما جاء العصر العباسي بحقبه الثلاث شهدت الإخوانيات عصرها الذهبي، حيث كثر النظامون وتعاطى القريض العلماء والفقهاء والقضاة والأمراء والولاة والقادة إضافة إلى الأدباء والكتاب والشعراء المحترفين فأخذ الجميع يتراسلون بالشعر كما يتراسلون بالنثر واكتملت ألوان الشعر الإخواني، فظهر بقوة مع ما سبق ذكره المداعبات والألغاز والاستدعاء والهدية، والتوديع والشوق وقصائد الود والصداقة والمطارحات أو المساجلات بكافة أطيافها وكذلك المجاوبات والمراجعات والإجازات الشعرية، وما إلى ذلك من الأغراض التي تصور العلاقات الشخصية والاجتماعية القائمة على صلاة الدم والنسب أو على الصحبة العامة التي يندرج تحتها الجوار أو المشاركة في الحرفة أو الهواية أو الدراسة أو الوظيفة والعمل إلى جانب الصداقة الخاصة التي تجمع بين الأصدقاء بجامع التجانس أو الميول أو المحبة والإعجاب.
