هذا الكتاب يتناول الأحكام الشرعية للأعمال التي يراد بها التحكم في خلقة الإنسان وتناسله. غير أنه إتضح في الكثير من المراجع التي تتناول الجوانب العلمية والتقنية لتلك الأعمال أن التعرض لجوانبها الإجتماعية، شاملة النواحى الدينية والأخلاقية والقانونية، يتطلب الوقوف عن كثب على حقيقة التقدم الفني المحرز في مجال علوم الأحياء الطبية خصوصاً فيما يتعلق بالإنجاب والوراثة البشرية، كذلك اتضح من أدبيات وأخلاقيات أعمال الأحياء الطبية في البلاد التي أجريت فيها أبحاث متقدمة في هذا الشأن أن الإمكانات الحديثة لعلوم الأحياء والوراثة والأجنة تؤثر تأثيراً بالغاً في وضع الإنسان أياً كانت عقيدته أو سلم القيم السائدة في بيئته، وهو ما يبرر توسيع نطاق الدراسة ليشمل، فصلاً عن الجوانب الدينية لهندسة الإنجاب والوراثة، الجوانب الأخلاقية والقانونية.
وعلى هذا الأساس فقد تناول هذا الكتاب الإتعكاسات الإجتماعية لتقنيات الأحياء الطبية من خلال فرعين، يتناول الأول هندسة الإنجاب بينما يتعرض الثاني لهندسة الوراثة. غير أن طبيعة الكائن الحي الذي تجرى عليه أعمال تلك الهندسة وهو الإنسان تقتضى التمهيد لتلك الدراسات بإستعراض الإتجاهات الفكرية والمبادئ العامة التي تتناول حدود الممكن والجائز في أعمال هندسة الإنجاب والوراثة.
