يجمع الدكتور سعيد سلام في كتابه هذا دراسات كانت مبعثرة في مجلات ودوريات وطنية ودولية، وقد تضمن الكتاب سبعة دراسات لسبعة روايات وهي "الخنازير" لعبد الملك مرتاض"، "ما تبقّى من سيرة لخضر حمروش، لواسيني الأعرج، "هموم الزمن الفلافي"، "خيرة والجبال" لمحمد مفلاح، "تجربة في العشق" للطاهر وطار، "الورم" لمحمد ساري، "متاهات ليل الفتنة" لا حميدة عياشي، وقد رتبها المؤلف وفق تواريخ نشرها في تلك المجلات والدوريات.
وقد اتبع المؤلف في إنجاز هذه البحوث منهجاً تاريخياً تحليلياً نقدياً ملتزماً بإبراز الحسّ القوي في تعامل هذه الروايات مع الواقع الجزائري الغنيّ بما فيه من تنوع في المضامين والقضايا الكبرى للوطن، مع ملاحظة أن هناك خطاً أساسياً يربط في هذه الرّوايات ما بين قضايا الثورة التحريرية وقضايا تطوّر المجتمع الجزائري وتجدّده في ظل التحولات السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والثقافية التي عرفها في عهد الإستقلال.
كما اعتمد المنهج على تلخيص مضمون الرّوايات المدروسة، وعلى إستخلاص دلالات الأمثال الشعبية الموظفة فيها سواء كانت بطريقة كليّة أو جزئية في الشكل أو في المضمون، كما وضح المؤلف مدى إنطباقها أو عدمه في التعبير سرداً أو حواراً عن مواقف الشخصيات الناطقة بها، وما مدى إندماجها داخل السياق أو في بنية الرّوايات.
وما مقدار مساهمتها في تعميق دلالاتها الرمزية الكليّة، وما مدى ما أضافته لها من طاقات إبداعية وقيم فنيّة وجمالية، ثم تُوج كل بحث بحوصلة خاصة لأهم النتائج المتوصل إليها في دراسة الموضوع، كما ذيّل كل بحث بفهرس خاص بالمصادر والمراجع والهوامش.
