وها هو هذا الكتاب بين يدي القارىء الكريم كتاب جديد عن أهل الذمة في مصر في العصر الفاطمي الأول ألفه أستاذ جامعي متخصص هو الدكتور سلام شافعي محمود، يتناول تاريخ النصارى واليهود في مصر في عصر لعبوا فيه دوراً هاماً في المجالات السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية وهو العصر الفاطمي الأول الذي امتد نحو قرن من الزمان (358-447هـ/969-1055م) وقد تتبع هذا الكتاب الهام دور هذه الطبقة من أهل الذمة في الوظائف العامة والحياة العامة. فتناول أداءهم الوظيفي، واحتفالاتهم، وكنائسهم وأديرتهم ومعابدهم ودورهم في النشاط الزراعي والصناعي، وحياتهم في القرى والمدن المصرية، ولغتهم القبطية ولهجاتها، وأسطورة تنصر المعز لدين الله الفاطمي. كما تناول علاقات الدولة الفاطمية بالدول المسيحية وأثرها على أهل الذمة، والسفارات التي يتولى رئاستها كبار رجال الدولة من أهل الذمة. وأفراد فصلاً لعلاقات الدولة الفاطمية ببلاد النوبة، والصلة بين الكنيسة القبطية في مصر والكنيسة النوبية، وأختتم الكتاب بفصل عن العلاقة بين مصر وبلاد الحبشة، وبين الكنيسة القبطية وكنيسة الحبشة. ومدى تأثرها بموقف الخلفاء الفاطميين من الأقباط إيجاباً وسلباً.
