الخيول من أجمل المخلوقات التي تربطها بالإنسان علاقة وثيقة منذ آلاف السنين وتحديداً منذ زمن نبي الله إسماعيل أول من استأنس وركب الخيل ، ومنذ ذلك الحين وأصبحت الخيول ، رمز النبل والفروسية ، يعتبر الخيل أحد أنواع الثديّات ذوات الحافر ، حيث يستخدم في الركوب ، والجر ، والمعارك ، والمسابقات وغيرها ، وكان قديماً من الحيوانات المفترسة ولكن مع مرور الوقت أصبح من الحيوانات الأليفة ، ويوجد له عدة أسماء ومن أبرزها الجواد والحصان ، فكلمة الخيل عبارة عن اشتقاق من كلمة الخيلاء والتي تعني الإفتخار بالنفس ، أما كلمة الجواد فهي مشتقّة من الكرم والعطاء والشجاعة حيث يحرص الخيل دائماً على حماية فارسه من أي تهديد يقع عليه ، أما الحصان فهي مشتقة من حصّن أي المكان المحكم الذي يختبئ فيه الفارس عند مواجهة أعدائه .
