رواية "في سبيل التاج" للكاتب فرانسوا كوبيه" مأساة شعرية أخلاقية تمثيلية بطلها فتىً تعارضت نفسه عاطفتان قويتان حبّ الأسرة وحبّ الوطن: فضحّى بالأولى فداءً للثانية، ثم ضحّى حياته فداءً لشرف الأسرة. ولقد تجلت في هذه المأساة عبقرية الشاعر ومواهبه الكبيرة، فالأسلوب سهل ممتع، والأفكار متسلسلة متماسكة، والوقائع جلية واضحة، وأخلاق أشخاص الرواية تفسرها أقوالهم وحركاتهم فلا غموض فيها ولا إبهام. ولقد ذهب النقاد في تقدير هذه المأساة مذاهب شتى حتى قال بعضهم أنها خير ما أخرج للناس من عهد راسين إلى يوم ظهورها.
ولقد تناول مصطفى لطفي المنفلوطي هذه المأساة ونقل موضوعها إلى اللغة العربية في قالب روائي جميل بعد أن أضاف إليها أشياء وحذف منها أخرى، وأخرجها لقرائه قصة يستهوي أسلوبها القلوب وتسترعي وقائعها الألباب، بقلم عذب وعبارة رقيقة وديباجة بديعة، ولا يفوتنا أن نقول أن الكاتب قد اشتغل بتلخيص هذه الرواية في إبان الحركة الوطنية الأخيرة، ولقد أوحت إليه الحوادث السياسية التي لا تزال ماثلة في الأذهان صفحات تفيض وطنية وغيرة حتى لكأنه قد أفضى إلى أمته في هذا الكتاب بكثير مما لا يستطيع كتابته في الصحف السياسية. وبالجملة فرواية "في سبيل التاج" كتاب الوطنية الخالدة في ثوب قصة خيالية تملك لبّ القارئ بجمالها وتتولّى تهذيب نفسه بآدابها وفضائلها.
