كان فيه تلك النزاهة الموجعة، التي تتعب الآخرين أحياناً، وتلحق به تعباً شديداً في معظم الأحيان. لم يكن يعمل بل كان يناضل، ولم يكن يشتغل بل كان يصلح وينقد ويربي ويهاجم ويكدح، ثم ينطوي على نفسه صامتاً أو قريباً من صمت مجلّل بالكآبة. وهذه النزاهة، التي تمنع عنه الراحة داخل العمل وخارجه، كانت تستنفر روحه وأعصابه وعقله وأحاسيسه، كما لو كان مسؤولاً عن الآخرين قبل أن يكون مسؤولاً عن ذاته، ومسؤولاً عن أحوال "الهدف"، قبل أن يلتفت الى عائلته ومسرّاته القليلة. كان يقرأ المقالات، كل المقالات، مدققاً متأنياً متمهلاً، معياره الأمانة ومرجعه حسن العمل، يحذف ويضيف ويلغي، كي تكون المقالة على صورة "الهدف"، تكون الأخيرة على صورة رئيس تحريرها، ويكون الطرفان على صورة قضية فلسطين. لم يكن يعمل كان يجاهد، ويرى في علاقات الكتابة والقراءة جهاداً مفتوحاً، بقدر ما كان يرى الجهاد في مجابهة الكتابات الفاسدة، التي تأخذ بالقارئ الى مكان لا نور فيه ولا معرفة.
