تناولت كُتُب التراجم هذا الكتاب بعناوين مختلفة، فذكره ابن السبكي بعنوان "شفاء الغليل في بيان مسائل التعليل"، والسيد مرتضى بعنوان "شفاء الغليل في بيان مسئلة التعليل"، والعيدروسي بعنوان "شفاء الغليل في القياس والتعليل"، وجاء بمثل عنوان العيدروسي في كشف الظنون.
والناظر في مقدمة كتاب الشفاء، أو في آخر ورقة منه - يكون بمنجاة عن هذا الإضطراب إذ صرح الإمام الغزالي في المقدمة بقوله، وسميته "شفاء الغليل في بيان الشبه والمخيل ومسالك التعليل".
وفي ختام الكتاب يقول: هذا نهاية ما أردنا أن نذكره في الأركان الخمسة من القياس، مقتصرين على المقصد الذي أعرب عنه لقب الكتاب، ووافين بها التزمناه: من "شفاء الغليل في بيان أشبه والمخيل ومسالك التعليل".
لهذا فإننا لم تتردد في أن نضع على الكتاب العنوان الذي ارتضاه له مؤلفه، وهو "شفاء الغليل في بيان الشبه والمخيل ومسالك التعليل".
وقد وجدنا الإمام الغزالي يكتفي بالجزء الأول من هذا العنوان وهو "شفاء الغليل" حينما يحيل إليه في كتاب المستصفى.
