مؤلف هذه الرواية شاعر وبطلها شاعر، وأكثر أشخاصها شعراء، وموضوعها الشعر والأدب، وعبرتها أن النفس الشعرية هي أجمل شيء في العالم وأبدعُ صورة رسمتها ريشة المصور الأعظم في لوح الكائنات، وإنها هي التي يهيم بها الهائمون، ويتوله المتولهون، حين يظنون أنهم يعشقون الصور ويستهيمون بمحاسن الوجوه. ولقد تناول مصطفى لطفي المنفلوطي هذه الرواية التي صورت التضحية تصويراً بديعاً وهي الفضيلة وعرّبها عن اللغة الفرنسية تعريباً حرفياً حافظ فيه على الأصل محافظة دقيقة محولاً سرد أحداثها في قالب قصصي، ليستطيع القارئ أن يراها على صفحات القرطاس.
وقد حافظ في سرده على روح الأصل بتمامه، وقيد نفسه به تقييداً شديداً، فلم يتجاوزه إلا في حذف جمل لا أهمية لها وزيادة بعض عبارات اضطرته إليها ضرورة النقل والتحويل واتساق الأغراض والمقاصد، بدون إخلال بالأصل والخروج عن دائرته، فمن قرأ التعريب قرأ الأصل الفرنسي بعينه، إلا ما كان من الفرق بين بلاغة القلمين ومقدرة الكاتبين.
