يهدف هذا الكتاب أن يكون سجلاً لثيمات الشعر الحديث, ومعرضاً لمناهج الشعراء في تقديم رؤاهم, وشبه تاريخ لتطور تقنيات هذا الشعر. ويطرح المؤلف في هذا الكتاب ثلاثة مبادئ تكشف عن جوهر النقد الأدبي وحقيقته وهذه المبادئ هي: سؤال كيف صار هذا النص أدباً أو ما الفرق بين الأدب وغير الأدب, بين الشعر واللاشعر. كل نص يستدعي المنهج المناسب. كيفية تعامل التحليل مع فحوى الصور وطريقة تشكلها وكلمة صورة هنا تشمل المجاز والكناية وأوجه البديع الأخرى. قد لا يوافق القارئ المؤلف في الشعراء الخمسة الذين يدرسهم قد يرفض نظرياته ومواقفه. ولكن لا يمكن إلا الاعتراف بأنه في دراساته الخمس المجموعة في هذا الكتاب في دراساته الأخرى, يقحمك وأنت تسير معه راضياً, في قلب المقطوعة الشعرية التي يدرس, فيعيشها كما عاشها الشاعر, انفعالات ومعاني وإيقاعات, وربما أحياناً أرضاً وسماءً, حتى تشعر أن المقطوعة صارت جزءاً من حياتك. ومن أهم ما تناوله الكتاب: مملكة الخبز والورد, يأتي العاشقون إليك, الفروسية, شعر معين بسيسو, الموضوعي والذاتي في شعر عمر أبو ريشة.
