"كتابٌ فريد ألّفه كاتب يوناني مجهول في القرن الأول للميلاد، إبّان غلبة الإمبراطوريّة الرومانيّة على مسرح الأحداث في أوروپا والمشرق، وسيطرتها على التجارة العالميّة، وصراعها مع الدّولة الپارثيّة في الجناح القصيّ من الشّرق الأدنى. لم يكن مؤلّف هذا «الپيريپلوس» جغرافياً أو مؤرّخاً، ولم تكن له شهرة أغاثارخيدِس أو سترابو أو پلينيوس، ولا حتى وصلنا إلى اسمه، بل كان الرّجل مجرّد تاجر بحّار مغمور، ترك لنا وثيقة بالغة الأهميّة عن أوضاع التجارة وبضائعها بين المشرق وأوروپا، وأتحفنا فوق ذلك بفوائد عظيمة حول أحوال جزيرتنا العربيّة آنذاك.
إنه نصّ غني ذو مصداقيّة، ويدلّ على خبرة صاحبه بالملاحة في أرجاء المحيط الهندي. فنحن نرى فيه كم كان الغرب الأوروپي مغرماً ببضائع الشّرق من توابل وأطعمة وأفاويه وأخشاب وحرير وأقمشة ونفائس، وببضائع جزيرة العرب (حضرموت وظُفار بالأخصّ) من أصماغ عطريّة كاللُّبان والكندر ."
