تستأنف المقالات في هذا المجلد المناظرة التى سبق أن بدأتها في كتاب ضد المنهج (وللاختصار سوف أشير إليه بالحرفين ض م)، كما أنها تطور هذه المناظرة أكثر، فثمة ردود على هذه الانتقادات، وثمة مادة جديدة كنت قد أعددتها للنشر في ورقة سابقة، ولكنني ام أتمكن من استخدامها، كما أن ثمة منافسة ممتدة عن مذهب النسبية ودور العلم (المذهب العقلي) في مجتمع حر، ومثل الكتاب الأسبق فإن هذا المجلد يتوخى نفس الهدف، أن يزيل العوائق التى ابتدعها المثقفون والمتخصصون لتقاليدهم وأن يهيئ السبيل لإبعاد المتخصصين (العلماء) أنفسهم عن الحياة في مراكز المجتمع الحساسة.
يهدف الجزءان الأول والثاني إلى غاية واحدة هي بيان أن العقلانية إنما تعد تقليداً أو تراثاً ضمن العديد من التقاليد الأخرى، أكثر من كونها معياراً يتوجب على التقاليد الأخرى أن تعمل وفقاً له، كما يطور الجزء الأول المناظررة المتعلقة بالعلم، ويمد الجزء الثاني المناظرة على استقامتها لتنسجب على المجتمع ككل، وفي كلتا الحالتين ف؟إن المشكلة النظرية الأساسية هي مشكلة العلاقة بين العقل والممارسة، إذ يفترض المذهب المثالي (تعتاد ممارسة العلم والفن الحديث بلغة طبيعية، كمقابل للقوانين الصورية) أن الممارسة إنما هي مادة غفل لكونها مصاغة من قبل عقل، وقد تحتوي الممارسة على عناصر العقل، وإنما بصورة عرضية وغير نسقية، فهي تطبيق واع ونسقى للعقل مركبة بصورة جزئية، وغير منظمة إلى حد ما تمنحنا علماً وتقدير مجتمع نحيا فيه، وتاريخاً يمكن أن يفخر بذاته، لأن الذي سطره رجالات بذلوا كل ما في وسعهم.
