منذ صدور عددها الأول في 20 أكتوبر 1969، لم تعبر صحيفة "الاتحاد" فقط عن مسيرة تجربة صحفية تتطور، بل جسدت قصة موازية لمسيرة اتحادية تترسخ. فالاتحاد "الصحيفة" نشأت قبل ميلاد اتحاد الإمارات "الدولة" بعامين وشهرين. وقد توافرت لصحيفة "الاتحاد" مميزات ولادة وتطور وانتصار، ليس من السهل أن تتوافر لغيرها. فى البدايات كانت متاعب التأسيس ومساحة الانتشار، وبعد ذلك أصبحت مواكبة الأحداث وتطوير العمل الصحفي التحدي المتجدد أمامها.
ورغم اقتراب صحيفة "الاتحاد" من الدولة فإن ذلك لم يجعلها مرهونة بخط تقليدي يعبر عن وجهة نظر واحدة.كما تميزت صحيفة "الاتحاد" بأنها ليست إماراتية الرأى فقط، إذ فتحت صفحاتها لعدد كبير من الكتاب البارزين في الوطن العربي، وفي العالم أيضًا.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب مسيرة صحيفة "الاتحاد" بعد مرور 40 عامًا على إنشائها. ويتضمن خمس دراسات عن موقعها في الصحافة العربية عند انشائها، وظروف نشأتها، ومسيرة تطورها عبر السنوات، وكيفية معالجتها للقضايا العربية الكبرى، ودراسة لصفحات الرأي بها كنموذج لأثر العولمة في الصحافة.
