أهمية الوصايا أنها تحرص على غرس قيم إنسانية سوية عند الإنسان، وتعالج الأمراض الإجتماعية التي تمزق البشرية، والحقيقة أن الشرائع كلها بكتبها ونصوصها- في جوهرها- إنما هي وصايا للإنسان، تصريحاً أو تلميحاً، للوصول به إلى القيم السامية التي تعزز رسالته وتخدم أهدافه.
وقد حملت لنا المصادر كثيراً من تلك الوصايا، والتي ستكون موضعاً للدراسة والتحليل. ولم تنحصر هذه الدراسة في وصايا الآباء للأبناء، فهناك وصايا الأنبياء والحكماء ووصايا الخلفاء والحكام والقواد والعلماء والمصلحين والزعماء، والكتاب وقبل كل هذا ما جاء في النصوص المقدسة التي حملتها الكتب المقدسة وأولها القرآن الكريم الذي حمل وجوها متعددة للإعجاز. إن أدب الوصايا محاوره الأشكال التعبيرية المختلفة شعراً ونثراً.
وليس من هدف هذه الدراسة الإحاطة بكل الأشكال التعبيرية ونماذجها وإنما حدود هذه الدراسة ما نص على أنه وصيه صراحة أو ضمناً بل نماذج من ذلك، نماذج تشمل قضايا وقيماً إنسانية.
