زين العابدين محمد بن أحمد المعروف بـ بن إياس الحنفي ويكنى بـ " أبو البركات هو مؤرخ مصري ولد في القاهرة سنة 1448م وتوفي بها سنة 1523م يعد من أشهر وأهم المؤرخين الذين أرّخوا للعصر المملوكي ولاسيما في الفترة الأخيرة منه. يُعدُّ كتابه بدائع الزهور في وقائع الدهور (5 أجزاء في 6 مجلدات) أهم مؤلفاته وأرّخ فيه لتاريخ مصر الضخم من بداية التاريخ وحتى سنة 1522م.

هو محمد بن أحمد بن إياس الحنفى أبو البركات مؤرخ بحاث مصري من المماليك.
تتناول هذه المخطوطات حياة مصر منذ الخلق حتى نهاية القرن العاشر الهجرى سواء من الناحية التاريخية, أو الأثرية أو الجغرافية, أو الفلكية, فيعتبر هذا الكتاب موسوعة تاريخية علمية, وفى نفس الوقت ملخصاً لأمهات الكتب...
فيقول ابن إياس أنى لما طالعت كتب تواريخ الأمم الخالية ورأيت مافيها من العجائب المتوالية, استخرت الله أن أجمع كتاباً لطيفاً أذكر فيه من أغرب ما سمعته, وأعجب ما رأيته قاصداً فيه الاختصار لكى لايطول فى التأليف مجموعة, وفى المثل الساير أقصر الكلام منفوعه, وقد ذكرت فيه من عجائب مصر وأعمالها, وما صنعت الحكماء فيها من الطلسمات المحكمة والبرابى والأهرام وغير ذلك, وذكرت طرف يسيرة من سير ملوكها, وذكر شئ من عجائب نيلها, وذكر شئ من خططها وآثارها, وذكر سعت أقليمها وأقطارها, وقد ذكرت فى كتابى من أجل ما سطره, وأفخر ما ذكره قاصداً فيه الاختصار كما تقدم, وسميته "نزهة الأمم فى العجائب والحكم" والمستعان بالله فى المبدأ والختام.
