فإنا لما صنفنا كتابنا الأكبر في اخبار الزمان ومن أباده الحدثان من الأمم الماضية والأجيال الخالية والممالك الدائرة، وشفعناه بالكتاب الأوسط في معناه ثم قفوناه بكتاب "مروج الذهب ومعادن الجوهر في تحف الأشرف من الملوك وأهل الدرايات ثم أتلينا ذلك بكتاب "فنون المعارف" وما جرى في "الدهور السوالف" وأتبعناه بكتاب ذخائر العلوم وما كان في سالف الدهور، وأردفناه بكتاب "الاستذكار لما جرى في سالف الإعصار"، ورأينا أن نتبع ذلك الكتاب سابع مختصر نترجمه بكتاب "التنبيه والإشراف" وهو التالي لكتاب الاستذكار، لما جرى في سالف الإعصار نودعه لمعًا من ذكر الأفلاك وهيئاتها، والنجوم، وتأيراتها، والعناصر، وتراكيبها، وكيفية أفعالها والبيان عن قسمة الأزمنة، وفصول السنة، وما لكل فصل من المنازل، والتنازع في المبتدأ به منها، والاستقصاء، وغير ذلك.
وذكر الأقاليم السبعة وقسمتها، وذكر الأمم السبع في سالف الأزمان، وذكر الأفدية بين المسلمين والروم إلى هذا الوقت، وتواريخ الامم وجامع تاريخ العالم، والأنبياء، والملوك من آدم إلى نبينا محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم" وحصر ذلك، وما اتصل به، ومعرفة سنى الأمم الشمسية، والقمرية، وشهورها، وكبسها، ونسميها، وغير ذلك من أحوالها، وما اتصل بذلك من التنبيهات على ما تقدم جمعه وتأليفه، وذكر مولد النبي "صلى الله عليه وسلم" ومبعثه، وهجرته، وعدد غزواته، وسراياه، وسواربه، وكتابه، ووفاته، الخلفاء بعده، والملوك، وأخلاقهم، وكتابهم، ووزرائهم، وقضاتهم، وحجابهم، ونقوش خواتيمهم، وما كان من الحوادث العظيمة الديانية، والملوكية في أيامهم، وحصر تواريخهم إلى وقتنا هذا - وهو سنة 345 للهجرة في خلافة المطيع.
