هي مجموعة قصصية ترصد كلُّ قصة منها ملمحًا إنسانيًّا ووجوديًّا لبطل القصة المعنية بما يعكس أفكار الكاتب حول الواقع، وتتراوح المعاني بين مكان عمل الكاتب كطبيب في مستشفى يمتلئ بأطفال تداهمهم النزلات المعوية في الصيف فيحفّز نفسه بأنهم يشبهون أولاده. وبين رغبة مخزونة في الغناء تنتاب أخاه الأكبر وتظهر لدى رقص الغجرية إلى أن يختفي أخوه من المشهد تمامًا وتجتمع الأسرة الريفية للبحث عنه ومعاقبة الغجرية (خطّافة الرجّالة)، لكن شيئًا لا يحدث سوى الكلام فقط. وفي قصته (امرأة في الزحام) يتعرض المؤلف إلى استثمار الميل إلى انتهاك المقدس عند من يُصَلّون لتكاثرهم لمشاهدة الحاوي الذي يحاول بدوره استثمار هذا المقدس بغريزة مُدَرَّبة، فيقترح شقَّ بطن ابنه بالسكين إذا جمع مبلغًا معينًا من الجمهور وهو يدرك أن إقامة صلاة الظهر سوف تمنع ذلك كله.
