كان للعلماء خاصة جهود كبيرة في نهضتنا الحديثة وذلك في توجيه الناس وتوعيتهم، ونشر العلوم العربية والدينية، وذلك على يد الكثيرين منهم: مؤسس جمعية العلماء بدمشق الشيخ محمد كامل القصاب الذي كان عطاؤه في التربية والتعليم والتوجيه كبيراً، ومن أعماله التي تدلُّ على إخلاصه وحبه للعلم والعلماء إنشاؤه جمعية العلماء، التي أسسها سنة 1356هـ / 1937م، وكان من أهادفها رفع كيان العلم والعلماء، والتصدي لعبث العابثين في عقائد النشء ونشر العلم عن طريق إنشاء المدارس ساعده في ذلك نخبة من كبار العلماء المخلصين.
في هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف أعمال الجمعية بتفصيل، ويعطي صورة واضحة للحياة العلمية والدينية بدمشق آنذاك، كلُّ ذلك مع الوثائق الكثيرة التي تُظهر الحقائق.
