عنى المؤرخون العرب بالتأريخ لمدنهم عناية قل أن تساويهم فيها أمة من الأمم, وافتتنوا فى ذلك افتتانا يدعو إلى الدهشة والإعجاب, لأن هذه المدن كانت مراكز النشاط الاقتصادى والعمرانى ومصادر الإشعاع الفكرى, ففيها أقيمت المساجد ودور الكتب والمدارس المختلفة, وفى هذه المدن نشأت الجماعات الإسلامية المختلفة التى يربطها رباط وثيق بمكان مولدها, ولأن هذه الجماعات هى التى قامت بتخطيط هذه المدن وأقامت منشآتها الحربية والدينية والمدنية والعمرانية.
وقد أفرد مؤرخو المدن الإسلامية قسما خاصا من كتبهم للتأريخ للمدينة وتطويرها, ثم يخصصون الجزء الأكبر من هذه الكتب للترجمة للنابغين من الرجال الذين أنبتتهم هذه المدينة, بل للنابهين ممن زاروها للتفقه أو التجارة, أو اجتازوها غزاة مجاهدين.
وقد فعل ذلك الرافعى القزوينى فى كتابه التدوين, فقد ضمن كتابه تاريخا لبلده من حيث بدئها وبنائها وفتحها وخصائصها, ثم ذكر فيه من وردها من الصحابة والتابعين, ثم من يعرف بنوع من العلم والدراية من سكانها وأهلها, ومن توطنها ونسب إليها أو إلى نواحيها ومن دخلها من غير أهلها متفقها أو تاجرا أو من وردها أو اجتازها غازيا أو زائرا.
وقد رأيت إتماما للفائدة أن أصدر البحث بالحديث عن عصر المؤلف ونسبه وشيوخه وتلاميذه, كذلك وجهت اهتمامى إلى الازدهار العمرانى بقزوين باعتبارها ثغرا يواجه الأعداء من الديلم.
