يهدف هذا المؤلف، في المقام الأول، إلى التعريف بقانون القضايا case-low حتى يسهل الإلمام به سواء بالنسبة لطلبة القانون أم بالنسبة لغيرهم من القراء العاديين أيضاً. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذا المؤلف وإن لم يكن الغرض منه اعتباره مقدمة للقانون الإنجليزي إلا أنه قد يكون معيناً لبعض طلاب القانون في بدء مرحلتهم الدراسية كما قد يعود بالفائدة على من يرغب منهم الرجوع إليه والاستعانة به في نهاية تلك المرحلة ونظراً لما يتسم به هذا المؤلف من بساطة تجعله سهلاً في نظر البعض، كما أنه قد يبدو متقدماً بالنسبة إلى غيرهم فإن هذا بذاته يقطع التفاوت الكبير في مدى إلمام القراء بالقانون الإنجليزي. وحتى بالنسبة إلى موضوع الفقه والذي اتسم تحديده بالقصور، فإن أقسامه وفروعه المختلفة قد عولجت باعتبار كل منها ذات قواعد قاصرة عليه دون غيره. والسوابق القضائية جديرة بالاعتبار والاهتمام لا باعتبارها مصدراً للقانون ولكن أيضاً بالنظر إليها من خلال المداولات المتعلقة بتسبيب الأحكام وتعريف القانون. وهذا ما يفسر اشتمال الباب الخامس في الكتاب على كثير من المسائل لا تتضمنها دائماً المناقشات التي تدور بشأن نظرية السوابق. أما الباب الأول فقد خصص لدراسة مقارنة لنظرية السوابق في إنجلترا وغيرها من البلاد الأخرى. بينما الأبواب: الثاني والثالث والرابع قد عنيت بمعالجة الاعتبارات المختلفة لنظرية السوابق الإنجليزية.
