كان ألكسندر فون هومبولت العالم الأبرز في وقته، وقال الكثير من معاصريه إنه كان الشخص الأشهر في ذلك الوقت بعد نابليون، ولا تزال هناك حتى الآن في جميع أنحاء الأمريكتين والعالم الناطق بالإنجليزية مدن وأنهار سميت باسمه جنباً إلى جنب مع سلاسل الجبال والخلجان والشلالات، ومئات الأنواع من النباتات والحيوانات، بل وحتى على سطح القمر هناك منطقة تسمى مار همبولتيانوم.
أما اليوم، فيبدو للمتتبع وكأن اسم هومبولت قد طواه النسيان خارج بلاده الأصلية ألمانيا ووطنه الثاني أمريكا الجنوبية، وهذا تحديداً هو السبب الذي دفع المؤلفة أندريا وولف إلى وضع هذا الكتاب الذي أرادت من خلاله إعادة تسليط الضوء على هذا العالِـم والرحالة الفذّ، والتذكير بمنجزاته التي تبدو لنا الآن بدهية ولا تستحق الانتباه، غير أنّ أعماله ومكتشفاته في مجال الطبيعة والكون، كانت من دون شك حجر الأساس الذي قام عليه علم البيئة الحديث.
تأسست حياة ألكسندر العلمية والمهنية على الرحلة الأهم التي قام بها إلى أمريكا الجنوبية التي بدأها عام1799 برفقة صديقه عالِم النبات الفرنسي إيمي بونبلان، وهي الرحلة التي تشكل العمود الفقري لكتاب أندريا وولف «اختراع الطبيعة» لا سيما رحلته لتسلق جبل «شيمبورازو» الموجود في الإكوادور. استلهم هومبولت نظريته في تكامل النظام البيئي العالمي ووحدته من المشاهد التي رآها عند وصوله إلى قمة شيمبورازو، فقد رأى بوضوح تأثير المناخ والارتفاع عن سطح الأرض على توزيع النبات والحيوان في منطقة الإنديز بأكملها.
