رواية اجتماعية تناقش حقبة زمنية من تاريخ مصر الحديث بين عامي 1919 و 2011 من خلال أحداث الرواية التي تعرض لشخصيات عائلة مصرية عبر أجيالها وما بين أحداث الرواية وصراعات أبطالها أفراد العائلة الاجتماعية والإنسانية والنفسية بينهم وبين عائلات أخرى، أو حيال بعضهم البعض أو حيال أنفسهم تمضي أحداث الرواية لتستلهم من وقائع وأحداث تاريخية ما تسقطه على حيوات أفراد تلك العائلة وبتوظيف الرمزية تنساب أحداث الرواية لترمز الأسماء والأحداث والأشياء لجزء من تاريخ مصر ويبقى الجرامافون عنوان العمل رمزًا قويًا وبطلًا ينافس أبطال الرواية في أهميته بالموسيقى التي تصدح منه أو الأغاني التي تقص هي الأخرى جزءًا من التاريخ وتنتهي أحداث الرواية ويبقى الجرامافون شاهدًا عليها أو ربما شاهدًا على عصور عاشتها مصر.
