لقد بيّن هذا البحث أن المجتمع المدني، ليس مقولةً ساكنةً جاهزةً للتوظيف، بل إنه صيرورةٌ فكريّةٌ وتاريخيّةٌ، حيث وُظّف هذا المفهوم، في بادية الفكر السياسيّ الحديث، كمقابلٍ للمجتمع الطبيعيّ، وتطوَّر، بعد ذلك، إلى فكرة المجتمع المدني / البرجوازي، بعد أن تصاعدتٍ الدعواتُ إلى خروج الإقتصاد من سُلطة الدولة، بالتوازي مع تنامي نفوذِ البرجوازيّة في القرنين السابع عشر والثامن عشر، ثم تَوَسّع هذا المجتمع، في معناه المعاصر، ليشمل بالتدريج، فئاتِ المجتمع كافّة، ممثّلة (تلك الفئات) في المنظمات والهيئات غير الحكوميّة والحركات المدنيّة.
كما وقفنا على أوجه أثر هيغل وماركس وغرامشي في تصور هبرماس للمجتمع المدني، مع إبراز إضافة هذا الأخير في الموضوع، والمتمثلة (تلك الإضافة) في التشديد على وظيفة الإندماج الإجتماعيّ التي يضطلع بها المجتمع المدنيّ من خلال المشروعيّة التي يمنحها لقرارات الدولة وقوانينها.
والثابت خلال هذه الرحلة الطويلة من تبلور مفهوم المجتمع المدنيّ: وظيفته السياسية؛ إذْ لا معنى للمجتمع المدنيّ خارج سياق المعركة من أجل الحريّات والمواطنة والديمقراطيّة والعدالة والمساواة، ومحاولة فهمه خارج هذا السياق (السياسي)، إفراغٌ له من طاقته النقديّة المستنفرة للبنى الإجتماعية الحالمة بالتغيير.
لكن هذا التغيير لا يمكن أن يكون "على جُثَة" الدولة، كما نبه إلى ذلك هذا البحث، ومعركةُ المجتمع المدني، معركةٌ ضدّ الإستبداد والتسلُّط، لا ضدّ الدولة؛ فلا يمكن، بأي حالٍ، تصوّر مجتمعٍ مدنيّ خارج الدولة، أو من دونها.
