كان صاحب ترجمتنا هذه "محمد بن محمد الصنعاني" متعدد المواهب والجوانب المعرفية، فقد كان له نصيب كبير من التاريخ، والأدب، والفقه، والسياسة، وغيرها من الجوانب العلمية التي لمع فيها، بل أدلى فيها بآرائه الخاصة الإبداعية التي تنم عن شخصية شمولية واسعة الأفق. وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع المصنف تراجم رجال اليمن من القرن الثالث عشر، وضمن تراجمه كثيراً من الأشعار الأدبية الرائعة وذلك بلغة رفيعة المستوى صافية المعنى سلسلة العبارة جذلة، شاعرية، رقيقة. وملئ كتابه بشروح لغوية لبعض ما أشكل من ألفاظ القصائد، عارضاً للفروق اللغوية بين ما يسمى عند اللغويين بالمشترك اللفظي، كما وضمنه بعض المسائل النحوية والصرفية، والبلاغية والشرعية وغيرها من العلوم المفيدة، والتي تزود القارئ بمعلومات قيمة، كما احتوى على ذكر كثير من المصنفات الإسلامية التي زخرت بها المكتبة الإسلامية. والمتتبع "لنيل الوطر" يلمح ميزات أُخر غير هذه التي عرض لها حتى بعد الكتاب موسوعة للتاريخ والأدب والسياسة والنحو والصرف والبلاغة وغيرها.
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً، وتجلى عمل المحقق بـ ضبط ما أشكل من الألفاظ والإعلام، ضبط الإشعار ضبطاً كاملاً مع وزنها وزناً عروضاً، اخرج اللغويات المشكلة مع شرحها والتعليق عليها، علق على كثير من الضرورات الشعرية المختلفة. عن بعض الآيات القرآنية، خرج الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، وثق التراجم التي وردت في الكتاب من مصادرها، ترجم للبلدان المختلفة، علق على بعض المسائل الفقهية والحديثة والبلاغية والنحوية الواردة، صدر التحقيق بمقدمة بسط فيها الكلام على علم التاريخ وأهميته، ثم أعقبها بترجمة للمؤلف ومصادره في كتابه.
