يقول "طنوس بن يوسف الشدياق الحدثي الماروني" في مقدمة كتابه هذا: "إني لما رأيت تواريخ لبنان مختلفة التبيان، إما لاختلاف المؤرخين، أو لعدم الاعتناء بسديد النقل المبين أو لجهلهم الخبر اليقين، أو لخوفهم من الولاة الظالمين. أخذت أفحصها فحصاً مدققاً. واسردها سرداً محققاً. وجعلتها مجموعاً مستوفي المطلوب على أحسن أسلوب واعتمدت بما حدث في زماني على سمعي وعياني، وسبرت ما جاءت به الرواة. ودققت في ما حدثني به السراة، ولما تم جمعه، سميته "أخبار الأعيان في جبل لبنان" وقسمته إلى ثلاثة أقسام: الأول في الجغرافية، والثاني في انساب الأعيان، والثالث في أخبار الولاة".
