لأن "كتاب الحاوي" عملٌ قائم بذاته عظيم الأهمية في بابه لما جَمَعه المؤلف فيه من أقوال المتقدمين والمتأخرين في التعريف بأعيان النبات التي تدخل في الأدوية المفردة، فضلاً عمّا أضافه الرازي من معلومات حصل عليها بخبرته ومشاهداته ومزاولته لمهنة الصيدلة، ومع ذلك فإنّ "كتاب الحاوي" لم يَلْقَ من العناية في هذا العصر إلاّ أقلًّ القليل.
وقد لجأتُ في مواضع قليلة إلى اختصار ما أورده الرازي من أقوال، وربًّما عدًّلتُ بعض عبارته-ولا سيما ما نقله عن غيره-إيثاراً مني للوضوح والإيجاز وتجَنُّباً للركاكة أو التكرار، ومراعاة لذوق القارئ في هذا العصر.
ولما كان الرازي قد أهمل في كتابه الحاوي تفسير عدد من المفردات التي أوردها في المداخل واقتصر على ذكر منافعها في العلاج فقد حاولت إكمال هذا النقص بإيراد منافعها في العلاج فقد حاولت إكمال هذا النقص بإيراد كلام مؤلفين آخرين أمثال: ابن عبدون الإشبيلي من كتابه "عُمدة الطبيب في معرفة النبات" وأبي القاسم الغَسّاني من كتابه: "حديقة الأزهار في ماهية العشب والعقّار".
وابن البيطار من كتابه: "الجامع"، وابن سينا من كتابه: "prwL8RB7Cvhref='/abookstore/bookpage.asp?id=21401'>القانون في الطب" وكتب أخرى.
وقد بذلت في تصحيح الأسماء والصفات وألفاظ اللغة جهداً مضنياً.
