هو الشيخ حافظ بن أحمد الحكمي، أحد علماء أهل السنة والجماعة، وأحد أعلام شبه الجزيرة العربية. ينتسب إلى قبيلة حكم المعروفة والتي تتمركز في المخلاف السليماني، وتعود أصولهم إلى الحكم، أحد أبناء سعد العشيرة، وهو أحد أجداد العرب القحطانية. و"حافظ" هو اسمه، وليس المصطلح الحديثي المعروف (نسبة إلى الحديث النبوي). ولد في قرية السلام المسمى حاليا بالخمس ، التابعة لمدينة المضايا بجنوب منطقة جازان جنوب المملكة العربية السعودية في 24 رمضان سنة 1342 هـ ، ثم انتقل مع أسرته إلى قرية الجاضع التابعة لمدينة صامطة بنفس المنطقة. وإتسم منذ طفولته بالذكاء وسعة الحفظ،، وحرص على حفظ القرآن وبعض المتون العلمية في سن صغيرة. وحينما أتم سبع سنوات من العمر ألحقه والده هو وشقيقه الأكبر محمد بمدرسة لتعليم القرآن الكريم في قرية الجاضع، وفيها قرأ على مدرسه جزأين من القرآن، ثم أكمل حفظه وعمره لم يتجاوز الثانية عشرة. كما أتقن الكتابة والخط، واشتهر بحسن خطه وجماله. كما قام بقراءة وحفظ بعض كتب ومتون الحديث والتفسير والتوحيد والفقه والفرائض مع أخيه بمنزل والدهما، حيث لم يكن بالقرية عالم أو مدرسة تقوم بتعليم هذه العلوم.

تبرز أهمية هذا الكتاب من أهمية العلم الذي يبحث فيه، فهو يبحث في علم التوحيد الذي دعت إليه الرسل وأنزلت من أجله الكتب، وقد رتب الشيخ حافظ كتابه الذي بين أيدينا، أعلام السنة على طريقة السؤال والجواب، ليسهل على الطلاب، لأنه أُلف لهم. وقد تحدث أولاً في تحقيق الأمر الذي خلق العبد له، ومعنى العبد، وشروط العبادة ومراتب الإسلام، من الإسلام والإيمان والإحسان، وتعريف كل مرتبة وأركانها، ومعنى كل ركن، وقد أطال الشيخ الحديث في ركن الإسلام الأول: الشهادتين، فبين شروط شهادة أن "لا إله إلا الله" ودليل كل شرط، ومعنى شهادة أن محمداً رسول الله ومقتضاها، وأيضاً أطال الحديث في ركن الإيمان الأول: الإيمان بالله، وفيه تحدث عن أقسام التوحيد، توحيد الربوبية وتوحيد الأسماء والصفات وتوحيد الألوهية، وقد قرن كل مسألة بدليلها من القرآن والسنة، وتحدث عن أركان الإيمان وعن الإحسان وعما يناقض الإيمان من الكفر بأقسامه، وتحدث عن السحر والكهانة والتنجيم وما يتفرع عنها وتحدث عن المعاصي، وختم الشيخ كتابه بسؤال قال فيه: من هي الطائفة التي عناها الني صلى الله عليه وسلم في حديثه عن الفرقة الناجية؟، فبيّن أنهم الفرقة الناجية، أهل السنة والجماعة.
