This English for Specufic Purposes (ESP) Book is aimed at developing and improving English language skills for the students of medicine.
The main purpose of English for Medicine is to improve students' academic study skills so that they will be able to understand and comprehend the medical subjects taught in English. The material has been developed after a thorough survey of the different academic subjects taught in the faculties of medicine. The need analysis shows that as students pursue their studies at these faculties, they are required to understand lectures in English, read English medical textbooks and teacher's notes, and eventually, read and answer examination questions in English.
Each unit of English for Medicine begins with a pre-reading activity which encourages students to use background knowledge to anticipate the content of the reading. This is followed by a vocabulary building section designed to practice using contextual clues to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words found in the reading.
The reading selections are all authentic taken from scientific and medical textbooks. They are the core of the lessons and the source of all the vocabulary, comprehension skills, and syntax and grammar topics presented in the units. The strategies of academic reading, such as skimming and scanning are presented and practiced to enhance understanding and comprehending scientific texts in medical context.
A wide variety of exercises is developed to identify and recognize the rhetorical functions used in scientific texts so that the students will be able to understand the written structure of a descriptive, defining, classifying, or any other rhetorical function commonly used in scientific and medical writing.
