على الرغم أن، علم الإجتماع في المرحلة الثانوية ينبغي أن يستهدف تفسير الأوضاع الإجتماعية والعمليات والمشكلات التي من الصعب فهمها وأدراك أسباب وحتمية التوافق معها. بل أن مقرر علم الإجتماع أكاديمي صرف لم يحاول أن يقترب من المشكلات العملية في حياة المجتمعات والتجاوب مع التغير الإجتماعي والمتغيرات المحلية والعالمية، وبالرغم من أهمية علم الإجتماع ودوره في تنمية الولاء والإنتماء لدى طلاب المرحلة الثانوية، وكذلك مواكبة بعض المتغيرات المحلية والعالمية إلا أنه لا يحقق مثل هذا الأهداف، حيث أن محتوى المنهج الحالي لا يتناول أية قضايا أو موضوعات من شأنها أن تسهم في تنمية الوعي بأهم المتغيرات المحلية والعالمية، وفي ضوء ذلك يأتي البحث الحالي ليكون من المتوقع أن يفيد في عدة جوانب مثل أنه يبين البحث نواحي القوة ونواحي الضعف في أهداف ومحتوى المنهج موضوع الدراسة، مما يمكن أن يفيد في تطويره بما يتلائم مع المتغيرات الإجتماعية التي يشهدها المجتمع، ويقدم البحث نموذج لمنهج مطور مقترح يمكن الإستعانة به لتطوير منهج علم الإجتماع الحالي، ويقدم وحدتين يتم صياغتهما لتنمية وعي الطلاب بأهم المتغيرات المحلية والعالمية، يمكن الإسترشاد بهما لبناء باقي أجزاء المنهج المطور المقترح، ويفيد البحث معلمي علم الإجتماع في تدريس مقرراتهم حيث أنها تقدم نموذجاً إجرائياً لكيفية استخدام التعليم التعاوني، وقد جرى تقسيم البحث إلى سبعة فصول هي كالتالي: (الفصل الأول: مشكلة البحث، الفصل الثاني: البحوث والدراسات السابقة، الفصل الثالث: علم الإجتماع والوعي الإجتماعي، الفصل الرابع: المتغيرات المحلية والعالمية التي ينبغي أن يتضمنها منهج علم الإجتماع بالمرحلة الثانوية، الفصل الخامس: إعداد أدوات البحث وضبطها، الفصل السادس: إجراءات الدراسة الميدانية ونتائجها، الفصل السابع: التوصيات والبحوث المقترحة).
