إدجار آلان بو: شاعِرٌ وقصصيٌّ أمريكيٌّ شَهِير. امتَلَكَ مَوْهبةً شِعْريَّةً وأَدبيَّةً فَذَّة؛ فقَدْ بَدأَ قِراءةَ الشِّعْرِ وكِتابتَهُ وهُوَ فِي الخامِسةِ مِن عُمْرِهِ مِمَّا أثارَ دَهْشةَ مُعلِّمِيه، وطَوالَ حَياتِهِ كانَتِ الكِتابةُ مَلاذَهُ ومَلْجأَهُ مِنَ المُشْكلاتِ الكُبْرى الَّتِي عاشَها. بَدأَ بنَشْرِ شِعْرِهِ مُنذُ كانَ مُجنَّدًا وذلِكَ تَحتَ اسْمٍ مُسْتعارٍ هُوَ «آلان بيري»، ثُمَّ تَوالَى إِنْتاجُهُ الأَدَبي. وبجانِبِ شِعْرِهِ كانَ صاحِبَ إِنْتاجٍ قصَصيٍّ مُميَّزٍ جَعلَهُ أبًا مُؤسِّسًا لِمَا عُرِفَ ﺑ «أَدَب الرُّعْبِ القُوطي» الَّذي حَفلَتْ قِصصُهُ بالفَظائِعِ والمَخاوفِ الَّتي عَكسَتْ طَبِيعتَهُ الحَزِينةَ المُتشائِمة.
تُوُفِّيَ «بو» فَقِيرًا مَدِينًا عَنْ أَرْبعِينَ عامًا في عامِ ١٨٤٩م، بعْدَ عامَيْنِ مِن وَفاةِ زَوْجتِهِ الشابَّةِ الَّتي أحَبَّها بشِدَّةٍ وآلمَهُ عَدمُ تَمكُّنِهِ مِنَ الوَفاءِ بنَفَقاتِ عِلاجِها.

هذه المجموعة هي الجزء الأول من القصص الكاملة للكاتب الأمريكي الشهير إدجار آلان بو ( 1809 - 1849 ).
والتي وصل عددها إلى تسع وستين قصة , يتضمن الجزء الأول هذا ثلاث وعشرين منها وكذلك الجزئين الثاني والثالث قريباً , لم أعمد في ترتيبي للقصص التي يتضمنها هذا الجزء إلى ترتيب زمني و لا تقسيم موضوعي , فستجد على سبيل المثال ( حفلة الموت الأحمر التنكرية ) المكتوبة عام 1842 تسبق قصة ( ظل حكاية رمزية ) المكتوبة عام 1835 , وستجد قصة ( موريلا ) ذات الذوق القوطي تسبق قصة ( ثلاثة آحاد في أسبوع ) ذات الذوق الساخر.
كل ما في الأمر أنني فضلت عمل خليط من ( التيمات ) المتباينة لكي تتعرف على كل جوانب عالم آلان بو باكراً.
