تهتمّ إدارة الإنتاج بدراسة القواعد العلمية التي تنظم عملية التصنيع في المشروع الصناعي ويطلق على هذا النشاط نشاط الإنتاج. ويهتمّ علم التسويق بدراسة القواعد العملية لتنظيم النشاط التسويقي ويطلق عليه نشاط التسويق. أما الدراسات التي تهتم بالشراء والنقل والتخزين وتتناول القواعد العلمية التي تنظّم كيفية الحصول على الاحتياجات المختلفة من المستلزمات فيطلق عليها مصطلح عملية الإمداد.
وهنا نودّ أن نذكّر القارئ بالأهمية البالغة لعملية الإمداد في المشروعات الاقتصادية المختلفة بل وزيادة أهميتها مع تزايد حركة النمو الاقتصادي وخاصة في المشروعات الصناعية. قبل أن يبدأ المشروع الصناعي في الإنتاج لا بد من التأكد من إمكانية تزويده بمستلزمات الإنتاج على نحو منتظم يساعد في تنفيذ جداول الإنتاج المختلفة، ومن الضروري أن تكون جودة هذه المواد ملائمة لعملية التصنيع. وإذا لم يتحقق ذلك فإن كفاءة المشروع الإنتاجية والتسويقية تتأثران إلى حد كبير ومن ثم لا يؤثر على المشروع فحسب بل أن ذلك يؤثر على الاقتضاء القوي بأسره.
ومن الملاحظ أن الاتجاهات الحديثة هي معالجة عملية الإمداد والأنشطة المختلفة المكونة لها كنظام متكامل بغرض تحقيق هدف أساسي ومحدد هو استخدام موارد المشروع بأعلى مستوى من الكفاءة. وفي هذا الكتاب سيتم التركيز على أهمية أنشطة إدارة الإمداد Logistics Management، وهي: الشراء وإدارة الموارد Puachasing and Material Management، ومشكلة النقل والتوزيع Transporation and Distribution.
