اهتم كثير من الباحثين "القدماء منهم والمحدثين" بعلي بن سودون البشبغاوي، وأشادوا به وبتفوقه في مجاله الأدبي، غير أن واحدًا منهم- بالرغم من هذا الالتفات إلى أعماله الفنية- لم يلق لتحقيق ديوانه الكبير اهتمامًا، ولذا كان هذا الديوان الضخم يحتاج إلى تحقيقه تحقيقًا علميًا يتلاءم ومكانة الشاعر ابن سودون الأدبية فإن هذا سوف يسهل علينا أن نتتبع منزلة هذا الأديب بين أقرانه من الشعراء والناثرين، إذا إن ديوانه يجمع بين أكثر الأشكال الأدبية شعرًا ونثرًا، التي طالما أتحف بها من كان في عصره.
وقد احتاج الديوان إلى شرح كبير من الألفاظ الغريبة، إلى جانب تصحيح كثير من الألفاظ وكتابتها كتابة سليمة وردت فيه الأعلام احتاجت إلى ترجمة، ورغم صعوبة تحقيق ديوان كبير الحجم مثل ديوان: "نزهة النفوس ومضحك العبوس"، ومشقة تحمل البحث عن نسخ صالحة من الديوان للتحقيق، إلى جانب صعوبة تحقيق الألفاظ الغريبة التي وردت في ديوانه، فإن رغبتي في إخراج هذا الأثر الأدبي إلى النور كانت حافزًا ومشجعًا لي على تحمل أي نصب في إعداده وإخراجه، محققًا أقرب ما يكون إلى الشكل الذي أخرجه مؤلفه علي بن سودون البشبغاوي، دون عيوب أو أخطاء قدر الإمكان.
