يعتبر كتاب نعيم بن حماد من أقدم الكتب التي صنفت في موضوع معجزات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ألا وهي الأخبار بما يقع ويكون قبل قيام الساعة، إن لم يكن أقدمها جميعاً، فأتى كتابه على رأس القائمة التي صنفت في هذا الموضوع، ومرجعاً أصلياً لمن يأتي بعده، وأكثرها إحاطة، ولما كان نعيم بن حماد يعيش في عصر يعد من أزهى عصور العلم فجاء كتابه سفراً كبيراً، أكثر فيه من الأحاديث والآثار المرفوعة والمقطوعة والموقوفة، بل وأقوال وروايات عن أهل الكتاب، بل وعمن أدرك الجاهلية وعن هرقل.
وقد قسم المصنف رحمه الله تعالى كتابه أقساماً وفصولاً حوت كثيراً من أحاديث الفتن والملاحم وعلامات الساعة، وإن لم يحط بها جميعاً، وقد أسهب في مواضع، واقتضب في غيرها، فنراه ُيسهب كثيراً فيما يختص، بالسفياني والمهدي وخروج الرايات، بينما تراه يقتضب الحديث عن الدخان وطلوع الشمس من مغربها والنفخ في الصور والدابة والعلامات الصغرى للساعة...
ولأهمية موضوع هذا الكتاب ولمكانة مصنفه عني "مجدي بن منصور بن سيد الشورى" بتحقيقه وتجلى عمله بـ: تخريج الآيات، تخريج الأحاديث والآثار وعززها إلى مصادرها، الحكم على الإسناد، بحسب ما ظهر له، ترقيم الأحاديث، ترقيم الأبواب عمل ترجمة للمصنف، وبيان منهجه في الكتاب، عمل فهرست لأطراف الأحاديث والآثار، يجمع في ثناياه المقطوعات والبلاغات وكلام نعيم بن حماد وغيره الذي قد يأت بعد روايته للحديث.
