كان الإمام السيوطي متنوع المعارف، واسع الثقافة، وهذا أمر يبدو واضحًا من خلال تراثه، والذي يخبر على اطلاعه الغزير المتنوع، وصرح السيوطي بتنوع تلك المعارف التي حباه الله إياها، ورزقه التبحر فيها فقال: "ورزقت في سبعة علوم: التفسير، والحديث، والفقه، والنحو، والمعاني، والبيان، والبديع، على طريقة العرب والبلغاء لا على طريقة العجم وأهل الفلسفة".
وقد صرح السيوطي- في كتابه: "الإتقان في علوم القرآن" إلى علوم يتسلح بها، وهي معارف لا يستغني عنها، وأدوات يستعين بها المفسر ليقترب من وجه الكمال وهذه العلوم خمسة عشر علمًا هي: اللغة، والنحو، والتصريف، والاشتقاق، والمعاني، والبيان، والقراءات، وأصول الدين، وأصول الفقه، وأسباب النزول، والناسخ والمنسوخ، والفقه، والأحاديث، وعلم الموهبة.
ونحن في هذا العمل كنا على لقاء مع واحد من أشهر مؤلفاته، قمنا بتحقيقه ونظمه على نسق واحد من أوله إلى آخره، والعناية بأسماء الأعلام وضبط الشواهد الشعرية، وغير هذا مما قمنا به ليخرج النص بصورة تعين القارئ وتسهل عليه الرجوع إلى ما يريد.
