يدور موضوع الكتاب حول "علم الخلية ووظائفها" وبمعنى آخرمعرفة مكونات الخلية من حيث بنائها وعملها وما يتم فيها من نشاط انزيمي، وكذلك معرفة مواقع الإنزيمات المختلفة فيها.
تعتبر الدكتورة "وفاء محمد شكري" أستاذ فسيولوجيا البنات / كلية العلوم بالدمام "أن دراسة الخلية أصحبت الآن عبارة عن دراسة الجزئيات من حيث مبناها ونشاطها الكيميائي، فانتقلت بذلك نظرة الباحث من مستوى الأعضاء الخلوية الى مستويات أدق من ذلك حتى استقرت في مستوى الجزئيات فأصبح مفهوم ما تقوم به الخلية من نشاط هو نتيجة تفاعلات بين ملايين من الجزئيات تقع جميعها في نشاطها أو تكوينها تحت توجيه وتنظيم وراثي خاص من الأحماض النيوكلييكية...". من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب، محاولة من الباحثة "شكرى" لاستعمال لغة الجزئيات في وصف مكونات الخلية، ودور كل منها وربط البناء بالأداء بالقدر الذي يسمح به المجال من معلومات علمية دقيقة تتطلبها طبيعة البحث في علم الخلية ووظائفها. حيث لا يزال هناك الكثير من المسائل الغامضة التي ما زال العلم عاجز عن تفسيرها.
جاء الكتاب في ثلاثة فصول ومباحث عدة، يتناول الفصل الأول منها الأساس الحلوي للحياة والطرق المستخدمة في مجال دراسة الخلية ويضم: "الطرق المجهرية" و"الطرق الكيموحيوية"، أما الخلايا من حيث التركيب والوظيفة فهي موضوع البحث في الفصل الثاني ويضم: "الخلية بدائية النواة"، "الخلية حقيقية النواة"، "جدار الخلية"، "الأغشية البلازمية"... الخ.
وأما الفصل الثالث والأخير فيسلط الضوء على تأثير العوامل البيئية على تركيب الخلية، ووظائفها وكيفية تكيف الخلية معها. ويضم: "تأثير الماء"، "تأثير درجة الحرارة المنخفضة"، "تأثير درجة الحرارة المرتفعة"، "تأثير الرقم الهيدروجيني"، "تأثير الملوحة"، "تأثير الإشعاع".
