تثير عبارة "عولمة الثقافة" ردود فعل متباينةن إذ يرى البعض فيها عالماً توحده ثقافة واحدة، بينما يرى فيها البعض الآخر فقدانهم لهوياتهم الثقافية وخصوصيتهم التي يسعى الآخر لطمسها. والحقيقة أن ما يترتّب على عولمة الثقافة ليس شيئاً واحداً في كل الظروف. وحقيقة الأمر أن عولمة الثقافة ليست سوى إحدى النتائج التي تمخضت عنها الثورة الصناعية حيث تطمح كل صناعة ثقافية في غزو أجزاء من السوق العالمية من خلال نشر منتوجاتها في كل مكان. والثقافة شيء مرتبط بمجتمع معطى ومحدد تاريخياً وجغرافياً كما أن لكل مجتمع ثقافته الخاصة، أي أن كل ثقافة مدمجة اجتماعياً. كما أن اللغة والثقافة تتبادلان صلات وثيقة فيما بينهما، فالمسائل التي يعبر عنها جيداً في لغة ليس لها مقابل في لغة أخرى، كما أن استيعاب لغة ما يعني استيعاب ثقافتها، وهوية الجماعة تتحدّد بكونها تشترك في السلوك والثقافة واللغة. أما في عولمة الثقافة فإن الفرد يمكن أن تعين له هويات متعددة تجند مختلف عناصر اللغة والثقافة والدين رغم أن التقاليد التي تنقل الثقافة عبرها تبصم الإنسان منذ طفولته جسداً وروحاً بكيفية غير قابلة للمحو.
إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب يعتقد أن الحديث عن عولمة الثقافة زلّة لسان أو هفوة لغوية وهو يتساءل عن إمكانية الحديث عن عولمة بعض أسواق الخيرات المسماة "ثقافية". والخلط بين صناعات الثقافة والثقافة يعني إحلال الجزء مقام الكل.
يعرض هذا الكتاب كيفية مواجهة الثقافات والتقليد لنظام العولمة ومحو الهوية الثقافية ،لتصبح جزءا من النظام العالمى ،يدعهما فى هذا وسائل الإعلام الكبرى والاتصالات الحديثة ،ولتصبح الثقافة قضية كل دولة ،مع ذكر لكيفية اندثار الثقافات الفريدة .
