يضمّ الكتاب القصيدة الفزارية التي نظمها أبو القاسم الفزاري في مدح الخليفة الفاطمي المنصور. وقد تمّ الاعتناء بها فجاءت في هذه الطبعة المحققة ضمن قسمين: تضمن القسم الأول الدارسة التي وضعها المحقق للتعريف بالشاعر أبي القاسم الفزاري، وتسليط الأضواء على الحياة السياسية والثقافية بإفريقية في عصره، أي في عهد الخلفاء الفاطميين الثلاثة الأوائل بالمغرب: المهدي (909-935).
وقد أطنب صاحب الدراسة في الحديث عن الاضطهادات وأعمال القمع التي تعرض لها في ذلك العهد فقهاء القيروان وصلحاؤها، معتمداً على المصادر السنية المناهضة للفاطميين، لا سيما منها رياض النفوس للمالكي. وتتمثل أهم المصادر التي اعتمدها المحقق ونقل عنها، فيما يلي: نقائض جرير والفرزدق لأبي عبيدة، طبقات النحويين واللغويين للزيدي، طبقات علماء أفريقية للخشني، أخبار ملوك بني عبيد لابن حماد، وبالخصوص، رياض النفوس للمالكي.
أما القسم الثاني فقد تضمن شرح الجزء الأول من القصيدة الفزارية لمحمد بن عبد الرحمن العنقي. ويحتوي هذا الجزء على ستة وثلاثين بيتاً (من مجموعة سبع وستين) مخصصة للإشادة بمآثر أبطال العرب وفرسانهم لا سيما في الجاهلية، قبل التخلص لمدح المنصور. ويبدو أن العنقي لم يرَ فائدة في شرح الجزء الثاني من القصيدة لأنه ربما اعتبره في متناول سائر المثقفين. على أن المحقق لم يقتصر على نصّ الشارح بل أضاف إليه عدّة فقرات مطولة في كثير من الأحيان، اقتبسها من أمهات المصادر. وبالنسبة لمنهج المحقق فقد كان على النحو التالي: تصحيح أخطاء النقل وإعادة قراءة بعض المفردات والمقطوعات الشعرية للاقتراب أكثر ما يمكن من النص الأصلي، وذلك بالرجوع إلى المخطوطتين اللتين اعتمدهما المحقق. تصحيح الأخطاء التي تسربت إلى الدراسة التمهيدية وإضافة بعض الهوامش والتعاليق والتعريف بالأعلام المذكورين فيها. تقسيم هذه الدراسة إلى عدّة فقرات تيسيراً للمطالعة والمراجعة، الإحالة إلى المصادر، سواء في الدراسة التمهيدية أو في شرح القصيدة، ولا سيما المصادر التي لم تكن مطبوعة عند إعداد الكتاب.
