كانت ولا زالت العقيدة هي جوهر الصراع الفكري على مر التاريخ الإسلامي، ذلك أنه لو تجرد المسلمون في خلافاتهم واحتكموا إلى النصوص لحسم الخلاف، لكنهم غلبوا الفروع وأقوال الرجال وتناسوا النصوص وهي الأصل، فكانت النتيجة هي زيادة التباعد وزيادة النفور والشقاق.
وقضية الصراع بين السنة والشيعة هي المثل الساطع على هذا الأمر. هذا وإن التهمة الأساسية التي توجهها السنة للشيعة على مر الزمان هي فساد العقيدة. على أي أساس بنت موقفها هذا؟
إن الإجابة على هذا السؤال تقتضي معرفة العقيدة من منظور السنة، كما يقتضي معرفة العقيدة عند الطرف الآخر المتهم وهو الشيعة... وهذا هو مدار البحث في هذا الكتاب، التعريف بالعقيدة لدى الطرفين ثم الخروج بنتيجة مطلوبة هي مدى قرب عقيدة أي من الطرفين من المفهوم الحقيقي للعقيدة. هذه الدراسة المقارنة هي محاولة يهدف منها المؤلف حسم هذا الخلاف بين الطرفين وتحقيق الاستقرار الفكري في الوسط الإسلامي.
